Freelancer (GAF)

oDesk (OD)

Scriptlance (SL) - (07/12/2012: Freelancer acquires Scriptlance)

In the beginning the goal is to win your first project.

Wining your first project is NOT so easy, but do not despair, it’s hard only at the beginning. You will have to learn many things and later you will really enjoy working on the internet. I was probably one of the luckiest people and won my first project (rating) in second week.

When it comes to transferring money from freelancing sites to your bank account it’s not a problem. You can read about how to transfer money (worldwide) here.
The most important is to earn money first!

Internet work is especially popular with home staying moms. These jobs without investment are also great if you are trying to start your own business without having to invest money from your pocket. If you’re planning to work full-time as a freelancer on these sites, you have to be prepared to dedicate more than 8 hours a day. That is of course just in the beginning until you’ll have regular clients.

Registration process on all sites is very simple, only oDesk has Readiness test which you will pass I don’t doubt very easily.

Don’t forget while you’re making your profile, that it should be professional looking. Buyers will probably look at your profile first, before they award you with a project. User name which you choose during your registration will show on every offer you make, so think twice before you choose. If you already have a company, it is probably smart thing to make your company name your user name.

When you create a profile you also select qualifications, and you can only apply on projects if it has your qualifications. For instance, if you marked “Excel” qualification and didn’t select “Web search”, that means that you can only place a bid on “Excel” projects.
But don’t worry, it is possible to change it later.

After you create your profile, start looking for projects that suits your qualifications.
You can search projects by viewing latest projects, or you can select desired category and then select newest in that category. There are thousands of new projects every day, but it is harder to win older ones, especially if you are a new member without rating/feedback. So when the new project comes out try to be among first to place a bid.

Open the project that you’re able to deliver and then click on “Place a Bid” and make your offer.
Your price offer should be within the budged set by the buyer (employer), and the minimum project price on GAF is $30.

The whole process from the beginning to getting paid looks something like this:

Always send private message

When you are placing your bid, the most important thing is to send PM (private message).
Introduce yourself to buyer, explain why should he choose you for his project, write your qualifications and skills required for the realization of his project. Write that you are new to this site, but that you will do his project accurately and on time. These are just some phrases that I used to get my first job, but feel free to be imaginative, but also professional.

Another of my suggestions is to offer the lowest bid.
Explain that you are a new freelancer and that you are willing to work for the lowest price, but that you’ll also provide an excellent service.

What? Lowest price?

Since you don’t have a single project behind you, buyer will rather choose someone who already has a successful project on freelancing sites and a good feedback.
Therefore you must offer something to buyer what will convince him to pick you. And in this case it is the lowest offer.

This is maybe the good time to say something about rating/feedback

All freelance sites have rating / feedback system. When the project in freelancing sites is finished, buyer and service provider rate each other and leave a feedback. Freelancers with higher ratings get more projects as buyers have more confidence in them.

Rating is a part of your reputation. More good ratings = more work

Some differences between sites

On oDesk you have only 2 bids after you sign in. And after you pass Readiness test and complete your profile info. . .your bid amount will increase. On GAF you can bid only on 30 projects per month, while on SL unlimited times. If you become a gold member on GAF then you can bid on 160 project and commission taken by site decreases from 10% to 3%.

I have to pay for something?

Don’t worry. You don’t have to pay anything from your pocket. When you finish your project, money will transfer on your freelancing account, and from that money commission will be taken. So you didn’t have to pay anything, you just got little less.

All sites take commission from 5-10% and if you are a gold member it’s from 0-3%.
So if you are a gold member on GAF and you complete a project worth $100 you will get $97 on your account.

Follow the rules of these sites

NEVER send your contact information to buyer. That includes email, skype, phone number and so on…

If you send your contact info to one of the buyers, freelance site will suspend your account and your career as a freelancer will be over.

This Internet work opportunity allows you to earn money and maybe even to employ other people if you have won bigger projects.

So don’t hesitate and turn your room into office.

To try - it doesn’t cost you anything, and maybe you’re made for this job!

Internet Wallet - buy, pay, withdraw money online

To be able to withdraw money earned over the Internet, or if you want to send payment to your online employees, or just want to buy stuff online - you need to have your Internet wallet. You can of course use wire transfer (directly from your credit card), but in that way, you are revealing your personal and financial information and transactional costs are much more expensive.

At freelancing sites there are many options to withdraw your money.
You can choose:
Moneybookers or PayPal.
There are other options as well, like: wire transfer, Payoneer Debit Card . . . , but MB and Paypal have definitely the lowest transactional fees. (MoneyBookers is becoming Skrill).

It’s up to you which Internet wallet will you choose – I personally use them both, but you should check if they are offering their services in your country. Paypal is not present in every country and also have some limitations for some countries regarding withdrawals or sending money, so if you are not sure if you would be able to send or receive money in your country, you should definitely choose Moneybookers as their services are present in almost every country in the world and will accept your local bank account with no problem.

Creating your Internet wallet account is not difficult. After you enter you account info, you will have to verify you email address and then your bank account. In MB you’ll also have to verify your postal address (they will send verification code to your home address, or you can scan your utility bill and send it via email).

After you enter your verification code, your account will be active and you’ll be able to send and receive money with just one click.

The problem may occur, if your bank is not in the SWIFT network (to receive money from abroad).
The easiest way to find out is to go to the bank and ask them to write you down your IBAN and SWIFT code. (or from the invoice your bank sent you)

If your bank is not in the SWIFT network – that’s your sign, that it’s definitely time to change your bank.
